With the introduction of cibuildwheel this ticket is effectively moot. Note that we still have issues with i686 builds on Linux with cibuildwheel but the problem is now quite different. has more details on that (and effectively replaces this ticket).

I gave cibuildwheel local build a shot last night, and here are the list of wheels generated after a couple of hours:
with this result, should I move onto setting up GH Action using cibuildwheel as the next step?

Underlying issue is spelled out in some detail in this comment. I’m not sure how much we can do until the relevant Docker image is updated.
